On April 8, the Human Rights Watch (HRW) released a damaging report accusing forces affiliated with the Sudanese armed forces (SAF) for arbitrarily detained and tortured civilians in areas under their control, leading a campaign of retaliation against perceived opponents.

HRW reported that the SAF and its allies, including the General Intelligence Service and the al-Baraa Ibn Malik Brigade, have targeted individuals based on ethnic identity, humanitarian work, political affiliation, and particularly against individuals accused of collaborating with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Sudan’s Office of the Attorney General, however, rejected the allegations, denying that any cases of arbitrary arrest, torture, or ill-treatment of civilians had taken place.
